Former monastery church (today Protestant town church) and Walterich chapel | Klosterhof 8, 9 (Flst. No. 0-17 / 5, 0-17 / 6) (map) |
Former monastery church St. Januarius (today Protestant town church):
The original cell, a small monastic settlement, was built on the remains of Roman cult buildings in 753. In 816/17 the monastery was founded and a large church was built under Emperor Ludwig the Pious and Abbot Walterich. At the turn of the millennium the church was renewed and in 1325 the east choir was rebuilt as a burial place for the Counts of Löwenstein. 1434–1445 the monastery church was rebuilt under Abbot Johannes. Reformed in 1556, the first organ was installed around 1560 and the community was granted access for the first time. After the Counter-Reformation 1632–1648, a new painting was carried out in 1685 and in 1786–1790 it was baroque with the installation of numerous galleries. In 1867 the town church was owned by the parish and redesigned in a neo-Gothic style. Walterich Chapel: It is a jewel of late Romanesque architecture, a high point of stonemasonry in southern Germany, which is very diverse in a very small space. It was built from 1225 to 1228 as part of the monastery church as part of a foundation by Staufer Emperor Friedrich II. A replacement for a lost crypt had to be found by building a large octagonal west tower. The chapel served as a prayer room for the monks. The interior is completely original. The exterior facades were renovated in the 18th century, as well as in 1870 and 1971. The original stones removed are in the Carl-Schweizer-Museum .
