Detailed memorial texts

  1. Monument text: The rest benches station was built in October 1865 on a large granite wreck on the benches east of the Sebnitz-Neustadter Strasse, near the Böhm. State border established. The Royal Saxon State Fiscus owned the property. As the highest point on the Gerstenberg and on the former salt road to Bohemia, the benches were probably a rest area for horse-drawn vehicles. No measurements were taken on the station. But it was connected from the stations of the degree measurement. After the opening of the observation tower on the north-western Unger on June 14, 1885, it became the new station 53 of the Royal Saxon Triangulation due to the more favorable observation conditions . On a memorial plaque on the tower you can read: “The High Protector / des / Gebirgsvereins fd Saxon Switzerland / Sr. Königl. Highness Prince Georg / Duke of Saxony / dedicated / on June 14, 1885. “The column is still at full height, but without a cover plate. The height bolt has broken off. The pillar inscription "Station / RUHEBÄNKE / der / Kön: Sächs: / Triangulierung / 1866" is very difficult to read, further weathering cannot be seen at the point. There is good protection through the protective fencing. The pillar consists of several cuboids that are also horizontally next to each other in the substructure. The substructure is significantly wider than the upper section. It was not possible to climb the column. The approx. 4.90 m column is made of granite from the benches and was measured and set up in 1866 by graduation assistant Friedrich Robert Helmert . In the period from 1862 to 1890, a land survey was carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony, in which two triangular networks were formed. On the one hand, there is the network for grade measurement in the Kingdom of Saxony (network I. class / order) with 36 points and the royal Saxon triangulation (network II. Class / order) with 122 points. This national survey was led by Prof. Christian August Nagel, according to which the triangulation columns are also referred to as "Nagelsche columns". This surveying system was one of the most modern layer networks in Germany. The surveying columns set for this purpose remained almost entirely in their original locations. They are an impressive testimony to the history of land surveying in Germany and in Saxony. The system of surveying columns of both orders is in its entirety a cultural monument of supraregional importance. (LfD / 2013).
