A mistress ( French : maîtresse = mistress, master) was a publicly known mistress of a prince, high-ranking nobleman or important official. In social conditions where marriages were primarily concluded under political and material aspects, men often had a concubine (“co-sleeper”) who, because that would have been impossible anyway, they did not try to keep secret, but instead legitimized “half”. Most of the time they had a closer affective and spiritual relationship with them than with their wife. Some princely mistresses had not insignificant political influence. The term was also used colloquially as a synonym for “beloved”, but this meaning is now out of date. Favorite is a synonym that has also become historical, but this term probably describes a less official status than that of the mistress.
