List of marine national parks in Thailand
Thailand has 26 Marine National Parks (MNP), 21 of which are official and 5 are still subject to different reviews.
The marine national parks are located along the coast of the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea (16 of the parks). The total area of the 21 official marine national parks is 5,810 km².
On the concept of the marine national park
The marine national parks represent a separate class from the national parks ( terrestrial , i.e. on land), and protected areas are occasionally managed in both classes. They are administered by the Marine National Park Division of the Royal Forest Department , Thailand's conservation agency.
Primary protection goals are the preservation of coral reefs , mangrove forests , seagrass meadows and the typical coastal evergreen forests of the monsoon areas (therefore not all marine NPs have water surface), as well as other special features, and also as landscape protection of the coasts and beaches ( scenery and beach ).
The most important legal bases are:
- National Park act BE 2504 (1961)
- National Forest Reserve act BE 2507 (1964)
- Wildlife Reservation act BE 2535 (1992)
- Forest act BE 2484 (1941)
- Fishery act BE 2537 (1994)
