Aarau coat of arms

The list of city councilors of Aarau chronologically lists the city councilors of the Swiss city of Aarau in the canton of Aargau . With the entry into force of the revised municipal code on January 1, 2014, the job title was changed to City President - a title that is widespread in Switzerland, but unusual in the canton of Aargau itself.

The city president (or city mayor) is one of seven members of the city council (corresponds to the council in other municipalities). He chairs the meetings of the city council and is in charge of the entire city administration; in addition, he can order precautionary measures in urgent cases. His deputy is the vice-president (or vice-commissioner).

From 1415 to 1798 Aarau was part of the Bernese Aargau , a subject area of the city and republic of Bern . As a so-called municipal city, Aarau was not assigned to any bailiwick and had a certain degree of autonomy. At the head was a mayor . During the time of the Helvetic Republic (1798–1803) a president led the municipality ; He was elected by the 21-member municipal council, which in turn was elected by 50 electors. The office of mayor in its current form has existed since 1803.
