Markus H. Meyer (2003)

Markus Heinrich Meyer (born May 2, 1934 in Lenzburg ; † May 18, 2015 ) was a Swiss lawyer and politician ( FDP ). From 1974 to 1987 he was mayor of Aarau . From 1977 to 1989 he was also a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau.

biography

Meyer grew up in Lenzburg in the canton of Aargau and attended the schools in Lenzburg and Aarau. After studying at the University of Zurich , which he completed with a Dr. iur. graduated, he initially worked as a clerk at the district court of Zofingen and as an advocate (attorney) in an Aarau law firm before opening his own law firm in Aarau. The people of Aarau first elected the liberal lawyer to the residents' council of the city of Aarau and finally to the city council . From 1974 to 1987 Meyer headed this as a full-time mayor. During his term of office, the city became illiquid in the course of the federal government's measures to dampen the economy in 1974, which forced the financial budget to stabilize over the next few years. Meyer's policy also sought to improve the urban infrastructure in terms of traffic and energy supply. The worldwide energy (oil) crisis of 1974 led to a project ("FOLA") to use the waste heat from the Gösgen nuclear power plant in a municipal district heating system. (This project was abandoned by the city council in 1988 after Meyer's resignation.) The transport infrastructure with its historically grown radial orientation towards the old town and the only Aare bridge was successively replaced by a ring solution with a tangential connection to a second, high-performance bridge of the higher-level cantonal road network, which is the prerequisite for a traffic-free city center and its economic development.

At cantonal level, Meyer was among other impetus for reflection on the role of Aargau in the renewal of the Swiss Confederation in the Helvetic Republic and to restore the rule of law principles in the current Justice ( "bugging scandal") and true. He also tried to initiate a middle-class school and education policy, which he did not succeed.

Meyer completed his military service in the infantry; he was a company commander. He also did significant mountain service and was frequently used as an official defense attorney in the military justice system. Markus Heinrich Meyer was the brother-in-law of the linguist Hansjakob Seiler .

  3. "FOLA" "(district heating for the area Olten-Aarau). The project envisaged using nine tenths of the waste heat that is generated in the power plant and given off via the cooling tower to be used for district heating. Should this project be successful, a similar concept was planned for the Leibstadt nuclear power plant for the city of Basel. On March 16, 1986, the voters in the city of Aarau voted with a majority of 60% to participate in the project, which approved two loans for 556,000 Swiss francs each. "
