List of Superintendents and Superintendents General of Courland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The court preacher Stephan Bülau acted as the first superintendent in the Duchy of Courland and Semgallia , which had been ruled by Duke Gotthard Kettler since 1561. He made a visitation in 1566 , but soon returned to Germany. After him, the office of superintendent, who, together with the consistory, had the highest level of supervision over the provosts and pastors, was firmly established, but was often not occupied for years. It was mostly associated with a parish in Mitau . When Courland fell to the Russian Empire in 1795 , the office remained. When the new statute of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia from 1832 unified the structures and official titles, the office was renamed to that of general superintendent.
