List of Algerian Ambassadors to the United States
In 1783 Salah Bey of Constantine (Algeria) was one of the first governments to recognize the independence of the government of George Washington from the government of Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham . A peace and friendship treaty was signed on September 5, 1795.
In 1860, when the Christian quarter of Damascus was destroyed, Abd el-Kader saved the employees of the US consulate. That is why Elkader was named after him.
The end of the hostage-taking in Tehran on January 20, 1981, was also mediated by Algerian diplomacy.
