List of the Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel regiments of the early modern period

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list gives an incomplete overview of the Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel regiments of the early modern period in the 17th and 18th centuries. Despite its small size, the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel raised standing troops between 1605 and 1806 . Initially still loyal to the Emperor due to the family ties to the Habsburg house, after 1740 it was always on the side of Prussia. His army was very much based on the Prussian army in terms of structure and uniforms . The most important representative was Ferdinand von Braunschweig , Prince of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Prussian general and commander-in-chief of the West German allied troops in the Seven Years War .

Explanation of the system

Not all of the regiments established in the Ancien Régime are listed here. Too often regiments were set up for just one campaign and leased to other territories by the princes. A master list and numbering of the infantry regiments of the Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel army was not introduced. The designation was based on the name of the regiment owner . The list only takes regiments that have lasted in existence in the order in which they were created. The founding year was added to each regiment. This is intended to facilitate comparability. This numbering consistently follows the Ticino line-ups . If several regiments were founded in one year, Ticino added a second number (such as "1748/4" = fourth Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttelsches regiment, which was set up in 1748). This is followed by the names of the head of the regiment or the commander.
