The governments of Jamaica and Mexico established diplomatic relations on May 17, 1966.

For the ambassador, the Jamaican head of state Elizabeth II issues letters of accreditation for the heads of the Central American states and Panama . She issues a letter of introduction for the High Commissioner to the Governor General of Belize Commonwealth Realm .

The ambassador in Mexico City represents the Jamaican government at OPANAL , Organismo para la Proscripción de las Armas Nucleares en la América Latina y el Caribe , a regional association of the International Atomic Energy Agency that emerged from the Treaty of Tlatelolco .
