Historical background

Danzig belonged to the Kingdom of Poland since 1466 . Since the city was an important trading center in the Baltic Sea region, many countries set up representations and consulates there, especially to deepen trade and economic contacts.

Even after the annexation to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1793 there were diplomatic representations of German states in Danzig. From 1871 to 1919 the city belonged to the German Empire . Since 1920 there has been a German consulate in the Free City of Danzig, which is independent under international law.

In 1962 the GDR opened a consulate in Danzig, which was taken over by the Federal Republic of Germany as consulate general in 1990.
