In the Edo era, pamphlets produced by xylography , so-called Kawaraban (か わ ら 版) appeared, which are regarded as the forerunners of newspapers. The oldest known is the 『大阪 阿 部 之 合 戦 之 図』 ( Osaka abe no gassen no zu ) from 1615 (慶 長 20).

Before 1900

In Japanese, with year of foundation:

  • 1862 官 板 バ タ ビ ア 新聞translation of a Dutch sheet arranged by the shogunate , name later changed to 官 板 海外 新聞.
  • 1864–1865 海外 新聞 was the first privately published sheet. Founder Hamada Hikozo (浜 田 彦 蔵), alias Joseph Heco.
  • 1867 萬 国 新聞紙 published by the Englishman Perry.
  • 1871 横 浜 毎 日 新聞, the first Japanese daily newspaper.
  • 1872 東京 日 日 新聞 the first Tokyo daily newspaper, forerunner of the modern Mainichi Shimbun .
  • 1874 読 売 新聞, the first "tabloid" (so-called Koshimbun ).
  • 1879 大阪 朝日 新聞, Osaka Asahi Shimbun .
  • 1888 東京 朝日 新聞, Tokyo Asahi Shimbun.

English speaking

Especially for the needs of foreign merchants, the following were laid:

  • 1861 Nagasaki Shipping List and Advertiser, Ed .: AW Hansard (28 № publ.)
  • 1861–1914 Japan Herald, Ed .: AW Hansard, now based in Yokohama.
  • 1862 Japan Express, published by the American Raphael Schoyer .
  • 1863 Japan Commercial News, Ed .: F. da Roza, a Portuguese. After two years he sold his printing company to Charles Rickerby .
  • Sept. 1865 September --- 1870 The first Japan Times, Ed .: Charles Rickerby in Yokohama.
  • 1867 Japan Gazette, by John Black
  • 1868 Hiogo News and Osaka Herald
  • 1870 Japan Mail, successor to the discontinued Japan Times.
  • 1878 Japan Mail & Times
  • 1879 Kobe Advertiser and Shipping Register
  • 1890 Japan Advertiser
  • 1891 Kobe Chronicle
  • 1897 Second Japan Times, merged with Japan Mail in 1918 . Renamed to Nippon Times (1943), since 1956 as the third Japan Times , subsidized by Gaimushō .
  • 1900 Japan Chronicle emerged from the merger of Hiogo News and Kobe Chronicle.
  • 1922 Mainichi, published by Mainichi Shimbun. Renamed Mainichi Daily News in 1960 , discontinued in 2001
  • 1940 Japan Times and Advertiser, an amalgamation of Japan Advertiser and Kobe Chronicle.
  • 1949 Shipping and Trade News
  • 1950 Japan News, renamed Yomiuri Japan News after the publisher in 1956 , and Daily Yomiuri two years later .
  • 1952 Tokyo Evening News, renamed Asahi Evening News after the publisher in 1954 .
