List of Freedmen's towns

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Historically African American communities in the United States , known in various areas as " Freedmen's town ", "Freedom Towns", or "All-Black towns", were communities established by or for a predominantly African American population. Many of these communities were founded or populated by freed slaves , either during or after the period of legal slavery in the United States in the 19th century.

In Oklahoma , there were these communities before the end of racial segregation dozens, as many African-American migrants found a room from the southeast, planting churches among their own terms. The most significant of these settlers was Edward P. McCabe , who hoped that so many African Americans would settle on the territory that it would become a black-ruled state. In Texas , 357 such "freedom colonies" have been identified and verified.
