Liu Yao ( Chinese  劉 繇 ), age name Zhengli (* 157 , † 198 ) was an officer of the Han dynasty .

He was born in 157 in Donglai, Mouping, the second son of Liu Wei. He was a relative of the Liu imperial family and carried the title of Marquis of Mouping . Liu Chong, his paternal uncle, served as the Grand Commander. His older brother Liu Dai, court name Gongshan, served as a junior officer in Yan Province.

In 174, Liu Yao followed his father into battle against bandits. He was able to capture their leader and restore peace to the country. For this he was promoted to noble of the palace . In 194, he was appointed Imperial Inspector of Yang Province by the Chang'an regime .

In 1955, Yuan Shu was in Huai Nan and Liu Yao feared a confrontation with him. He sent his scouts to Danyang and Qu'e, who were stopped by Wu Jing ( Sun Jian's brother-in-law ) and Sun Ben . Yuan Shu then planned to get rid of Liu Yao and sent his troops out. Liu Yao sent Fan Neng and Zhang Ying to the Huai River to defend themselves, who stopped the intruders. Yuan Shu wanted to set himself up as Imperial Inspector of Yang Province and fought Liu Yao's troops in 196 with Sun Ben and Wu Jing. They were later joined by Sun Ce , who with 10,000 men broke Zhang Ying's resistance.

Liu Yao withdrew to Hui Ji and sent Zhang Ying upstream to station his troops in Pengze. Ze Rong was also dispatched and ordered to kill Grand Administrator Zhu Hao . Ze Rong was defeated on Mount Zouru in 197, and the next year Liu Yao fell ill and died in Yuzhang. In the biography of Taishi Ci in Sanguo Zhi , it is mentioned that Liu Yao declared himself the Grand Administrator of Danyang before his death.
