Ze Rong
Ze Rong ( Chinese 笮融 , IPA (high Chinese) [ [d̥z̥ɤ35 ʐʊŋ35] ] * 161 , † 197 ) was a general of the late Han Dynasty on the eve of the Three Kingdoms period in Imperial China .
He was from Danyang Province and served as a general under Governor Tao Qian . He was charged with overseeing the grain transports in Guangling and Pengcheng, but he embezzled the grain and used the money to build a large Buddhist temple. Tao Qian did not arrest him, however, and Ze Rong deserted when Cao Cao attacked in 193.
When he escaped to Guangling, he took 10,000 people and 3,000 horses with him. Zhao Yu , the Grand Administrator of Guang Ling, welcomed him as a guest, but Ze Rong poisoned his host soon after.
When Liu Yao took action against the warlord Sun Ce , Ze Rong joined the alliance of the princes of Wu. Together with Xue Li , he camped near Moling (today's Nanjing , Jiangsu ). When Sun Ce beat them and forced them to retreat, Ze Rong averted complete defeat by attacking the city of Niuzhu while fleeing and forcing Sun Ce to divide his troops. He then tried unsuccessfully to wear Sun Ce down.
After losing several other cities, Liu Yao and Ze Rong gave up their positions and moved to Yuzhang. On the way, Ze Rong killed his ally Xue Li. When they got to Yuzhang, Ze Rong killed the Grand Administrator Zhu Hao and tried to keep Liu Yao out of the city. Liu Yao initially attacked him unsuccessfully, but his second onslaught drove Ze Rong away, who took refuge in the mountains. There he was captured and executed by the local tribes.
