Live at New Morning, Paris is a jazz album by Ryan Porter & the West Coast Get Down. The recordings, which were made on October 17, 2019 in the Paris jazz club New Morning , were released on June 12, 2020 on the World Galaxy label .

background

The live album, which was preceded by three studio albums, is a document from Porter's first European tour with his own band in autumn 2019. At the appearance at the New Morning jazz club in central Paris, Porter played with his long-time collaborators, the saxophonist Kamasi Washington , the Bassist Miles Mosley , keyboardist and pianist Brandon Coleman , trumpeter Jumaane Smith and drummer Tony Austin . All of these musicians are also members of the West Coast Get Down Jazz Collective from Los Angeles.

The live set contained material from the last two albums Porters, The Optimist (2018) and Force for Good (2019). Porter began the concert evening and the album with a homage to his long-time mentor Roy Hargrove (who died in November 2018) by performing his composition “Strasbourg / St. Denis ”which Hargrove had written especially for the New Morning .

Dave Summer named the album one of the best new releases of the month in Bandcamp Daily and said this recording from 2019 contains everything you could want for a live show. This concert in the Paris Club New Morning has a strong immediacy, it is music that is fun and only nourishes the need for more, according to the author.

According to Alex Whetham, who reviewed the album in Exlaim , each of the musicians involved bring everything in, with outstanding solos such as Coleman's spindly and twisty improvisations in “Mesosphere” and Washington's energetic crescendo in “Carriacou”. But these solos in no way overshadow the rest of the record; Porter definitely holds his own, and Smith consistently presents solid trumpet solos; The close-knit rhythm section of Mosley and Austin also shines throughout. However, the sound quality leaves something to be desired, as the audience noise can occasionally distract from the performance, which means that some instruments sound thin in certain places, especially Brandon Coleman's piano playing. But when it comes to live jazz in 2020, fans of the genre couldn't go wrong, says Whetham. The different moods and genres as well as the cast with some important stars of modern jazz are a solid example of the current state of jazz.
