Lizzy Carbon and the Losers Club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lizzy Carbon and the Losers Club is a book for young people by Mario Fesler that was published by Magellan Verlag in July 2016 . It is Fesler's debut novel and the first in a three-part series about the character Lizzy Carbon. Fesler was awarded a German Youth Literature Prize for Lizzy Carbon and the Losers Club in October 2017 at the Frankfurt Book Fair .

content

13-year-old Elisabeth Carbon, called Lizzy, and her best friend Kristine are among the outsiders at their school. This is also evident again at the annual school festival. People like Kristine or Lizzy are preferably used for the uncool jobs, which Lizzy stupidly says out loud when presenting the school festival projects. That's why Lizzy is given the task of setting up her own project with those she considers disadvantaged. Little by little, Lizzy and her “Losers Club” are enjoying their own project, which is to become a dark restaurant . But then the members of the club break away for various reasons and the dark restaurant is no longer feasible. With the remainder, Lizzy does something completely different at the school festival - a kind of art performance that allows everyone to experience life as an outsider.

Emergence

According to Fesler, the setting for the book was, among other things, the Martin Luther School he attended in Rimbach , where he was surrounded by clever and quick-witted girls throughout his school days. Therefore, he knew pretty much what the heroine of his first published novel should look like, according to Fesler.

The book was published by Magellan Verlag in July 2016 ( ISBN 978-3-7348-5025-7 ). In August 2016, Fesler presented the book at the 36th edition of the Erlangen Poetenfest and in September 2017 at the European Children's and Young People's Book Fair in Saarbrücken.

construction

Lizzy acts as the first-person narrator of the plot, which is repeatedly interrupted, supplemented and commented on by insertions from Lizzy's diary in which she writes down what is happening at her school, but also at home.

reception

The group with which Lizzy is condemned to prepare a school party reflects the different facets of being an outsider and is described in the book as the losers' club . On the other hand, the book tells of an emerging community of those otherwise avoided and of a slow rebellion against learned structures.

In the children's magazine GEOlino , the verdict was: "Lizzy and her people grow so fond of you that you want to fill out the membership application for the Losers' Club immediately ."

Mario Fesler will read from the book at the Erlanger Poetenfest 2016

Britta Selle, children's and youth book editor at MDR Kultur , says that Fesler does not shy away from big and small truths in his book: “There is clearly talk of bullying and marginalization, injustice and spite are shown. At the same time, he looks at different family constellations and the difficulties that accompany growing up. ”Selle says that Fesler is holding the mirror up to the reader, fortunately not doing this as an educational admonition at all, but full of situational comedy and a wink. Selle sums up in her criticism that it is a wonderful book that goes to the heart and stimulates thought.

As part of the European Children's and Youth Book Fair in Saarbrücken, the novel was nominated for the Franco-German Youth Literature Prize.

As part of the Frankfurt Book Fair , Fesler was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize for his debut novel in October 2017 . The jury's reasoning stated: "With his feeling for accurate dialogues and his sympathy for his characters, Mario Fesler is a special new talent and an asset to German-language children's and youth literature ."

Sequels

In July 2017, the second volume in the series was published with Lizzy Carbon and the wonders of love . According to Fesler, it was not about telling a 100,000th love story, but rather to show the broadest possible cross-section of everything that makes love so complicated; what can go wrong, but what can also go right. In the sequel, which takes place two years after the plot of the first book, Lizzy has finally found her place in the school. In July 2018 a third and probably last part of the series was finally released. In Lizzy Carbon and the agony of choice , Lizzy involuntarily ends up on the candidate list for the school speaker election .
