Lyubomir Krastanow ( Bulgarian Любомир Кръстанов ; born November 15, 1908 in Pleven , † May 3, 1977 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian meteorologist and geophysicist .

Life

He first studied physics at the University of Sofia and then specialized in Leipzig and Dresden in 1940 and in Moscow in 1950 . In 1941 he joined the Bulgarian Communist Party , from 1966 to 1971 he was a member of the party's central committee . In 1961, Krastanov took over the position of director of the Geophysical Institute, which he held until 1977. From 1962 to 1966 he was minister and from 1962 to 1968 also president of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences . He also belonged to several foreign science academies, including the Leopoldina since 1970 . From 1966 to 1977 he was also chairman of the National Committee for Spatial Research.

In his scientific work he dealt with physical chemistry and general meteorology , in particular the physics of the atmosphere .

He was awarded the Georgi Dimitrov Order and the Dimitrov Prize.
