Llorenç Garcías i Font

Llorenç Garcías i Font (born October 16, 1885 in Artà , Mallorca , † 1975 ) was a Spanish botanist and pharmacist . Its botanical author's abbreviation is " Garcías Font ".

Life

He was born into a wealthy family in the northeast of the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca. He graduated from the University of Barcelona in 1906 as a pharmacist . In Barcelona he became a member of the Foundation of the Catalan Institution for Natural History. He then returned to his birthplace and worked there as a pharmacist. He was known as the pharmacist Pujamunt . For over 70 years he worked on a study of nature and in particular the botany of Mallorca. Llorenç Garcías i Font was one of the founders of the Society for Natural History of the Balearic Islands, in whose newspaper he wrote articles in Catalan . Further publications were made in the Official Journal of the Catalan Natural History Institution. In the course of his scientific work, he compiled a herbarium of 1,100 plants . He gave the name of a plant species newly described by him Romulea assumptionis (it is considered by some authors as a subspecies of Romulea columnae ).

He was also committed to the Mallorcan language and culture and was a member of the staff of the fortnightly magazine Llevant and was a sponsor of the Regional Museum of Artà . The ornithological collection of 257 specimens of birds from 118 different species, compiled by Llorenç Garcías i Font, has also been included in the museum.

Honors

Even before his death, the Foundation of the Catalan Natural History Institution made him an honorary member. In the 1980s, the Artà high school was named after him.
