Lloyd William Daly

Lloyd William Daly (born October 6, 1910 in Plano, Illinois , † February 26, 1989 in Englewood, New Jersey ) was an American classical philologist .

Life

Lloyd William Daly studied Classical Philology at Knox College , where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1932 . He completed his master's degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . After his promotion to the Ph.D. he was hired as an acting professor of Greek at Kenyon College . From 1937 to 1937 he was visiting professor at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens . In 1938 he went to the University of Oklahoma as a lecturer in ancient languages ​​and literature . After his appointment as Associate Professor , he moved to the University of Pennsylvania in 1947 , where he was appointed Full Professor . From 1951 to 1952 he was Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences . He was then elected Dean of the College for seven years. In 1958 he was appointed Allen Memorial Professor of Greek . In 1977 he retired. From 1953 until his death he was a member of the administrative committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. In 1976 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .

In his research, Daly dealt with broad areas of Greek and Roman literature. His main research interests included the Middle Latin lexicography.
