Loch Hourn ( Scottish Gaelic : Loch Shubhairne ) is a sea loch in the Highlands on the west coast of Scotland . The elongated fjord - like inlet flows into the Sound of Sleat , which separates the Scottish mainland from the Isle of Skye .
To the south, Loch Hourn, which is around 14 kilometers long, is bounded by the Knoydart peninsula and to the north by the western foothills of Kintail . At the confluence with the Sound of Sleat, Loch Horn is about 2 kilometers wide, then narrows to just over 1.5 kilometers, until it narrows to about 300 to 400 meters wide from Barrisdale Bay, about halfway along . The tidal range is about three to four meters. Some of the loch's dozen or so small islands near the shore are within walking distance at low tide .
Loch Hourn is bordered by mountains with steep flanks on both banks, which is why the loch is often referred to as the sea loch that is most reminiscent of Norwegian fjords. To the south, the loch is dominated by Ladhar Bheinn , the highest Munro on Knoydart, and to the north is the Beinn Sgritheall , another Munro.
At the eastern end is the small settlement Kinloch Hourn , which can be reached via an approx. 36 km long single track road from Invergarry on the A87 through Glen Garry . The south bank is largely uninhabited, on the north bank are the small towns of Arnisdale and Corran at the end of a road from Loch Duich via Glenelg . There are only footpaths along the banks of Loch Hourn.
Similar to Loch Ness and Loch Morar , Loch Hourn also has legends and occasional reports of a sea monster .
