Loch an Eilean (also Loch an Eilein ) is a freshwater lake in the Scottish Highlands . It is located in the Spey Valley, known for its numerous whiskey distilleries, about five kilometers south of Aviemore . Loch an Eilean has a slightly curved shape, is around 1.6 km long and up to 500 m wide.

Loch an Eilean is easily accessible by car from the B970 via a spur road that leads to a car park at the northern tip of the lake. As a rule, the destination of those arriving is not Loch an Eilean itself, but a view of the ruins of Loch an Eilean Castles, which are very picturesque on an island in the lake. The island on which the ruin stands is now a nature reserve and not open to the public. Rare ospreys nest on the island and can be seen from the shore while fishing in the lake.

Hole at Eilean Castle

Loch at Eilean Castle was built in the 14th century, presumably by Alexander Stewart, Wolf of Badenoch. In the centuries that followed, the castle's owners changed several times. The owners were the Mackintosh , Gordon families and, from 1567, the Grants . In the 18th century, the facility was abandoned because it no longer met military requirements. The castle complex was originally accessible from the bank via an artificial dam. This dam is now below the surface of the water, as Loch an Eilean was dammed a few meters as part of the water regulation in Scotland. Accordingly, today there are many remains of the wall directly on or in the water. This picturesque picture of the ruin does not correspond to the actual conditions of the former military facility.
