Barrage

The world's largest roller weir in Rock Island

The barrage consists of a roller weir with eleven damming rollers with a total length of 366.7 meters. In contrast to most other dams, these are offset in the direction of flow. Two of the damming rollers are equipped with overflow openings.

The water level is 9 feet (2.70 m). The purpose of the weir is not flood protection, but damming the Mississippi for shipping.

The dam on Rock Island is the largest roller weir in the world.

lock

The lock consists of two chambers. The main chamber is 182.9 m long and 33.5 m wide, the second lock chamber is 109.7 m long with the same width. This means that large push convoys have to be decoupled. The uncoupled barges are pulled into the large lock chamber on ropes, while the push boat is locked through the second chamber.
