Lodewijk Frans Asscher (born September 27, 1974 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch lawyer and politician of the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA). From November 2012 to October 2017 he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Social Affairs and Labor in the Rutte II cabinet .

Lodewijk Asscher comes from a well-known Jewish family on his father's side . His great-grandfather Abraham Asscher was one of the chairmen of the Amsterdam Jewish Council and his uncle Edward Asscher is an entrepreneur ( Koninklijke Asscher Diamant Maatschappij ) and a former member of the First Chamber for the VVD . His mother, Irene Asscher-Vonk , was also a lecturer in law and was a member of the Socio-Economic Council (SER); his uncle Hans Vonk was a well-known conductor.

Life

Lodewijk Asscher studied at the University of Amsterdam Law and received his doctorate there. Until 2006 he was a lecturer in IT law at the same university .

In 2002 he was elected to the local council of Amsterdam, in 2004 he was also group chairman . From 2006 to 2010 and from 2010 to 2012 he was an alderman ( wethouder ) for finances, among other things. Because of Mayor Job Cohen's premature departure , he was provisional mayor of the capital for three and a half months in 2010. In November 2012 Asscher became Dutch Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Social Affairs and Labor.

In the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands in 2017 , the PvdA, whose party leader Asscher has been since 2016, achieved its historically worst result. She obtained only 5.7 percent of the vote and only received 9 seats in the Second Chamber.

Lodewijk Asscher is married and has three children.
