Lodewijk Caspar Luzac (born August 1, 1786 in Leiden , Province of Zuid-Holland ; † February 18, 1861 ibid) was a Dutch liberal politician , he was interior minister in the Schimmelpenninck cabinet in 1848 and minister for reformed church affairs.

Life

Lodewijk Caspar Luzac completed a law degree and was a fellow student of the future Minister Hendrik Jacob van Doorn van Westcapelle . After completing his studies, he worked as a lawyer after being admitted to the bar . On October 20, 1828 he became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General (Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal) for the first time for the Liberals and was a member of this on June 30, 1848. He represented Holland from 1828 to 1840 and then the province of Zuid-Holland between 1840 and 1848 . During his twenty years in parliament he was one of the decisive opponents of the government policy of Kings Wilhelm I (1815 to 1840) and Wilhelm II , who ruled between 1840 and 1849. On October 23, 1830 he became a member of the State Commission for the administrative division of the Netherlands.

Luzac replaced Herman Jacob Dijkmester on October 18, 1836 as chairman of the Second Chamber of the States General and held this office until he was replaced by Maurits Pico Diederik van Sytzama on October 17, 1837. He was also from October 1, 1838 to March 25, 1848 judge at the court for the Arrondissement of Leiden . Furthermore, between June 9, 1841 and his death on February 18, 1861, he was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Leiden .

In 1844 Lodewijk Caspar Luzac was one of the nine politicians (Negenmannen) , alongside Johan Rudolf Thorbecke , Schelto van Heemstra , Edmond Willem van Dam van Isselt , Jacob Hendrik van Rechteren van Appeltern , Lambertus Dominicus Storm , Sebastiaan Hendrik Anemaet , Berend Wichers and Jacob de Kempenaer , who took the initiative for a new Basic Law. He was from March 17 to November 4, 1848 under the chairmanship of Thorbecke member of the State Commission for the Reform of the Constitution of the Netherlands (Grondwetsherziening van 1848) . On March 25, 1848 he took over the office of Minister of the Interior (Minister van Binnenlandse Zaken) in the Schimmelpenninck cabinet and held this office until May 13, 1848, when Jacob de Kempenaer succeeded him. At the same time he acted from March 25, 1848 until his replacement by Schelto van Heemstra on June 30, 1848 as Minister for Affairs of the Reformed Churches (Minister voor zaken der Hervormde en other erediensten) .
