Lodovico Gritti (also Ludovico or Alvise Gritti, Hungarian Lajos or Alajos Gritti , German Aloisius Gritti ) (* approx. 1480 in Istanbul ; † September 29, 1534 in Medgyes , then part of the Kingdom of Hungary ) was a Venetian merchant, banker and politician. He served as a minister under Sultan Suleyman I , was the confidante of Makbul Ibrahim Pasha and served as the imperial administrator of Hungary from 1530 to 1534.

Life

He was born as the son of Andrea Grittis (1455-1538), who later became the 77th Doge of the Republic of Venice , and an unknown Greek or Turkish woman in Istanbul. In 1496 his father and his siblings brought him back to Venice, where the children received an extensive education. He studied at the University of Padua , but his illegitimate birth prevented him from advancing in Venice. So he returned to the Ottoman Empire , where he initially worked as a spy for Venice. He later made a living from the jewelry trade and amassed an enormous fortune.

In 1527 he became the secret advisor to the Dīwān and the friend of Makbul Ibrahim Pasha . During this time he lived in his own palace next to Pera. The people liked him for his kind, generous, and honest demeanor. On the recommendation of Makbul Ibrahim Pasha, Sultan Suleyman I began to promote him.

Lodovico Gritti was buried in Székesfehérvár .
