Lodovico Laffranchi
Lodovico Laffranchi , occasionally Ludovico, (* 1875 ; † June 6, 1952 in Milan ) was, after Herbert Adolf Cahn , one of the most important Italian numismatists who dealt with Roman coinage.
life and work
Laffranchi, a simple municipal employee, was introduced to numismatics through his uncle Pompeo Monti. In 1927 he was appointed curator to manage the numismatic collection of Castello Sforzesco . Until then, there had been no personnel for this task in Milan. He took part in a numismatizing congress in Brussels , where he gave a lecture on I diversi stili nella monetazione romana .
With the resignation of the Gnecchi brothers from the board of the Rivista Italiana di Numismatica , where Laffranchi had already worked as editor from 1913 to 1917, he was given the opportunity to head the journal. The first two editions under his direction appeared in 1918. In the following year he ventured beyond the previous program of the magazine by allowing a coin history contribution by Ugo Monneret de Villard , which offered a coin history. It was entitled Monetazione dell'Italia barbarica . In the same year, in the second fascicle, there was a contribution by Aristide Calderini , who - for the first time in Italy - dealt with Egyptian numismatics. As a result, the Rivista, as a specialist journal for coin collectors, had become an internationally recognized organ of numismatics. The reasons Laffranchi stepped down from the editorial role are largely unknown. He continued to cooperate with the trade journal and published a number of articles in it. The "triumvirate" Monneret de Villard, Gian Luigi Cornaggia and Pompeo Bonazzi took over the management.
When the fascists came to power in 1924, the collaboration with the Rivista Italiana di Numismatica ended, and it was not until 1940 that an article appeared again in this paper, with whose policies Laffranchi was just as unfriendly as with the regime. Apparently this opposition - Laffranchi refused to join the party - prevented him from receiving positions in the academic network commensurate with his achievements. Instead, he continued his work in the form of numerous articles. He wrote in the Bollettino del Circolo Numismatico di Napoli , in the Rendiconti della Pontificia Accademia di Archeologia , in the Swiss Numismatic Journal , but also in Numizmatikai Közlöny , The Numismatic Chronicle , in Historia , in the Rassegna Numismatica , in Aquileia Nostra , Numismatica e Scienze Affini , in Aegyptus and in the Atti e Memorie dell'Istituto Italiano di Numismatica . He retired on July 1, 1934. In 1936 he became consulente of the Gabinetto Numismatico and in December 1939 he received the “Medaglia di Benemerenza” from the Podestà. In 1941 he rejoined the Consiglio direttivo of the Rivista Italiana di Numismatica, but then resigned to rejoin in 1950.
Laffranchi died, largely forgotten, in Milan in 1952. In 1952 he received the gold medal from the Royal Numismatic Society .
