Longitudinal axis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In technology , biology and other sciences , the longitudinal axis is the axis of a body that corresponds to the direction of its greatest extension. The longitudinal axis is often also an approximate axis of symmetry of the body. In vehicles , the longitudinal axis points to the front.

vertical axis (yaw axis) : Yaw (roll)

If it is in the body to an aircraft or vessel, instead, is also on its roll axis (Engl. Roll axis ), in a land vehicle against it from its roll axis spoken. The tilt angle is roll angle (English bank angle), or roll angle , the movement in air or water vehicles and roles , in land vehicles other hand shake is called. If other components of movement are added, one speaks of “ vibration ”, “staggering”, “eggs” or similar colloquial terms .

In construction and in traffic route construction , a section in the direction of the longitudinal axis - the so-called route - is referred to as a longitudinal section. It is especially important for the graphical representation of the inclination along the traffic route (and for certain installations), while the elevation or transverse inclination is shown in cross-sections .

The rotation of technical axes or shafts usually takes place around their longitudinal axis.

In the case of rotations of celestial bodies, on the other hand, the rotary movement occurs in the majority of cases around the shortest axis. Physics and mechanics speak in this context of the axis of the greatest moment of inertia .
