Lorcan Allen (born March 27, 1940 ) is a former Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil , who was between 1961 and 1982 a member of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) and twice served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Life

Deputy and Minister of State

Allen was the son of Fianna Fáil politician Denis Allen , who was a member of the Dáil Éireann from 1927 to 1933 and again from 1936 until his death on March 29, 1961. He himself initially worked as a farmer like his father and was elected for the first time as a member of the Dáil Éireann as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil in the elections of October 4, 1961 at the age of just 21 years 6 months as the successor to his deceased father. In this he represented after his re-elections on April 7, 1965 , June 18, 1969 , February 28, 1973 , June 16, 1977 , June 11, 1981 and on February 18, 1982 until his defeat in the elections on November 24, 1982 the constituency of Wexford .

On December 13, 1979, Allen took office for the first time when he was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture by the new Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Charles J. Haughey , whom he had previously supported in his candidacy for chairman of the Fianna Fáil. He held this office until the end of Haughey's first term on June 30, 1981. He held the position of Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture again in Haughey's second government between March 23 and December 14, 1982.

Local politicians and political controversy

After leaving the House of Commons and the government, Allen worked as an auctioneer and ran the Allen and Kenny Ltd auction company . In the elections of February 17, 1987 and June 15, 1989 , he ran unsuccessfully for re-entry into the House of Commons. He later became involved in the local and municipal politics and was at the county elections on June 20, 1985 June 27, 1991, 10 June 1999 and 11 June 2004 respectively as representatives of Gorey Council member of the County Wexford ( County Wexford Council ) elected. In addition, he was elected in the elections of June 10, 1999 and June 11, 2004 each as a member of the nine-member municipal council of Gorey. After it became known after the 2004 county elections that he had used fake election advertising signed by then Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and thus gained an advantage over his competitors, his party membership was suspended in July 2004 for a period of one year until 2005.

In 2006, Allen tried to be re-nominated as his party's candidate in the elections for Dáil Éireann on May 24, 2007 , but was subject to the then constituency holder of Fianna Fáil John Browne . In October 2006 controversy arose again over Allen’s political activities after it was revealed that he was instrumental in assessing the purchase price of land in Gorey as chairman of a county council committee. The newly assessed area also included land with a size of 15.4 hectares, which belonged to the Allens family and which increased in value to 36 million euros as a result of the revaluation. Fundamental criticism of the redistribution of the urban area had already arisen five years earlier.

In the county elections of June 5, 2009, he finished with 1,246 votes only sixth place in the five places to be awarded for Gorey in County Council Wexford and thus retired from the body.
