Lord Invader (born December 13, 1914 in San Fernando , Trinidad , † October 15, 1961 in New York ; real name Rupert Westmore Grant ) was a composer and singer of Calypsos .

Life

Lord Invader became active as a calypso singer in the 1930s. His biggest hit was Rum and Coca-Cola , the lyrics of which he wrote. He took over a melody from 1906 from the title L'Année passée (German: "Last Year") composed by Lionel Belasco . When the comedian Morey Amsterdam came to Trinidad in September 1943 to look after American soldiers, he picked up the island-famous song and had it registered for copyright in the USA under his name. The Andrews Sisters celebrated a world hit with Rum and Coca-Cola in 1945. In the subsequent copyright lawsuits, the Andrews Sisters version was classified as plagiarism , so Lord Invader and Lionel Belasco were awarded damages. The other participants could still be mentioned as composers.

During the 2-year trial, “Lord Invader” was often in New York, and so there is a live recording from the Townhall (123 W 43rd St), New York City, on December 21, 1946, directed by Alan Lomax . The total of 22 tracks (apart from the introduction) also contain Lord Invader's version of Rum and Coca-Cola , available on the CD Calypso At Midnight , released on November 15, 1999 by Rounder Records .
