Live and act

He was born in Florence in 1362 as the son of Antonio Ridolfi , who was a descendant of the progenitor Ridolfo, came from Val di Pesa and died in 1385. Lorenzo Ridolfi was actively involved in Florentine politics within the Guelph Party and was persecuted for this and banished into exile.

Lorenzo first studied the Seven Liberal Arts in Florence. Coluccio Salutati was among his teachers and he began to get enthusiastic about the classic authors and rare books. Finally, from 1381, he attended the University of Bologna for about six years and assisted the scholars of canon law, Gaspare Calderini, Giovanni Fantuzzi, Giovanni da Legnano and, in particular, the last one, Lorenzo di Pino, in their lectures. In 1387 he received his doctorate in both civil and canon law .

After a few months of teaching at the University of Bologna, he returned to his homeland to enter into a marriage with Caterina Barucci detta Pichina arranged by his brother. Then he returned to his teaching position.

From 1393, when the political and economic fate of the Ridolfi family began to recover, Lorenzo's political commitments became increasingly relevant. He was sent as ambassador from Florence to Pope Bonifacio IX and in 1394 he became guild leader of the guilds and guilds in Florence . In the following years he held all important public offices in the city.

In 1402 he wrote his most important work De usuris et materia Montis ; in the years that followed, he left the academic path to try his hand at the more lucrative consulting business. He was part of several diplomatic missions aimed at countering the growing power of the Duchy of Milan and expanding the territories of Florence, which resulted in a close alliance with the Republic of Venice . In addition, Ridolfi played an important role in the preparation of the Council of Pisa in 1409, which was convened to formulate new agreements within the Western Schism .

He died in Florence in 1443.
