The LorikSoftware from Lorienne SA is a professional software for digital cartography . It is an integrative and modular complete solution for the production of cartographic products.

As a complete solution and special program for the production of printed and digital topographic maps , this software combines the functionalities of a graphics processing program with the functions and advantages of modern geographic information systems . In principle, the functional areas can be divided into three areas. Firstly, the data import and data storage, secondly the coordination, further processing and preparation of the data and thirdly, the data export and print preparation .

Modular structure and scope of functions

Since version 2.0, LorikSoftware has been divided into two topic-based and modular software solutions (LorikMapFactory and LorikGISPublishing). LorikMapFactory is a comprehensive and standalone map creation workflow solution that can be used to create, edit, organize, publish and automatically update cartographic products. LorikGISPublishing combines the publication of data and databases from geographic information systems (GIS) with a cartography software that provides functions for design, print preparation and web mapping . The respective modules of both themed solutions are based on the same technology and are all compatible with each other.

LorikMapFactory is divided into the following modules:

  • LorikCartographer , a vector-based graphics and drawing tool
  • LorikGISMapper for the automated and individualized production of maps using geographic data
  • LorikPublisher for managing the publication of printed maps
  • LorikDigital to use cartographic repositories as part of the creation of digital maps for the Internet or other electronic applications

LorikGISPublishing is divided into the following modules:

  • The LorikGISRuleEditor automates the individual map design on the basis of imported GIS sources (data and / or databases) and previously defined import rules.
  • LorikGISPublisher offers direct and dynamic map printing based on GIS sources
  • LorikGISDigital to generate digital maps for the Internet or other electronic applications from GIS sources

In February 2012 the new version 4.0 of the Lorik software appeared. From version 4.0, NAS data can also be imported and further processed with LorikGISMapper. This means that the new exchange format of AAA data management is available to all users.

Distribution / areas of application

The Lorik software is used for the computer-based production of maps . It is a complete solution for the creation of topographic maps and tries to combine the functions of the various special programs of the cartography industry in a modular software solution. When viewed as a graphics and drawing program , this software is in direct competition with well-known tools such as FreeHand or Adobe Illustrator . By specializing in the creation and publication of maps, the Lorik software has a range of functions specific to digital cartography ( see above ), for importing, editing and publishing maps, which no graphics and drawing program or other software can do provides.

The Lorik software and its documentation are available in French and English. The Lorik software runs on any standard PC on which the TCP / IP network protocol is set up. What is required:

  • Windows XP, Vista or 7 (32 & 64 bit)
  • 85 MB storage space for the installation (plus the online documentation, 225 MB are required)
  • Minimum of 2 GB RAM (main memory), for Windows Vista and Windows 7 4 GB RAM is recommended.

LorikSoftware offers customized solution models for state survey offices and institutes, defense institutions and administrations, publishers and service companies (e.g. engineering offices ). The distribution is international. The software will u. a. Deployed by the following institutions: Federal Office for Topography of Switzerland, State Office for Surveying and Geoinformation Saxony-Anhalt , State Surveying Office Schleswig-Holstein, Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), Service Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine (French Navy), Ministry of Defense (British Ministry of Defense), Hamburg Port Authority (electricity and port construction Hamburg), Novasys (Switzerland), Tele Atlas , Navteq , Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe , Michelin , Pietruska Verlag, etc.

history

The Lorik software was developed in the early 1990s by engineers and cartographers from Lorienne SA in Paris, which was founded in 1991. The aim of the developers was to use the most technically advanced and above all user-friendly operating system NeXTStep , created by Apple founder Steven Jobs, to program a system with which cartographers can easily design and edit topographic maps , and with which the entire production process of The card construction should be carried out with software until the final print. Since at that time there was no software in the field of map production that was so comprehensive and especially easy to use, the largest map publisher in France, Michelin, decided in the mid-1990s to create all of its map series with Lorik software. When it became clear that there would be no future for NeXTStep, the Lorik software with its NeXT engine was ported to MS Windows systems in the late 1990s.

Up to the version of LorikSoftware 2.0, the software was divided into the modules GISLink, Cirrus, Nuages, Dry and LorikWeb. In April 2009 Lorienne SA published version 2.0 with the current modules (see above) and thus reacted to the current market changes. The functional scope of the obsolete modules has been supplemented and reorganized with new functions.
