history

The area of Los Altos Hills was originally inhabited by Indians of the Ohlone people. After archaeological finds had been made in the previous decades, the remains of an Ohlone settlement with an Indian cemetery were made and archaeologically examined in 1970.

The Mexican government gave the area, which is now part of Los Altos Hills, in 1840 to two people, Jose Gorgonio and Juan Prado Mesa. Gorgonia's territory was Rancho La Purissima Concepcion , Mesas Rancho San Antonio . Gorgonion sold his land to Juana Briones de Miranda in 1844, who in turn sold the area that is now Foothill College in 1855 to Sunnyvale founder Martin Murphy, who gave it to his daughter Elizabeth Yuba and her husband William Taaffe. The Briones family and the Mesas family merged through marriage.

The ranchos were later divided into smaller lots and sold. French and Italian families settled there and began to cultivate wine . In particular, the Zinfandel grape was grown. Viticulture was replaced by the cultivation of fruit around 1900, after flour dust destroyed the vines.

With effect from January 27, 1956 Los Altos Hills was raised to a city ("City").
