Los Andes is a city in Chile in the V Valparaíso region . It has 66,708 inhabitants (as of 2017).
geography
Los Andes is located 70 km north of Santiago de Chile . Nearby is the highest mountain in South America, the Aconcagua .
history
The place was founded in 1791 as Santa Rosa de los Andes and received city rights in 1865. It was renamed Los Andes. In 1887 the city was hit by a devastating cholera epidemic.
economy
The city is an important economic center as it has a direct road connection to the Argentine city of Mendoza . From 1973 to 2004, Automotores Franco Chilena manufactured vehicles here .
Due to the favorable climate, agriculture around Los Andes plays an important role.
tourism
Due to its proximity to the Andes , Los Andes is an important stopover to the ski areas. A few kilometers from the city center there is a thermal bath in a private hotel complex. The thermal bath is also accessible to day visitors and consists of indoor and outdoor pools. To the south of the city is the La Campana National Park with its palm forests .
