Lothar Krappmann

Lothar Friedrich Krappmann (born November 19, 1936 in Kiel ) is a German sociologist and educator .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1957, Krappmann first studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main, with Oswald von Nell-Breuning and Hermann Josef Wallraff , among others . After completing his master's degree in 1961, he studied sociology and modern history, first in Cologne and later in Berlin, where he received his doctorate in 1969.

His dissertation on “Sociological Dimensions of Identity is now in its 10th edition and is considered a standard sociological work. The central message of Krappmann's identity theory is that there are four basic qualifications in role-acting. These four qualifications are role distance , empathy , tolerance of ambiguity and representation of identity . Furthermore, he developed an interactionist role model .

Prior to his dissertation, Krappmann was among other things AStA chairman of Sankt Georgen and from 1962–64 chairman of the Association of German Student Associations (VDS).

From 1969 Lothar Krappmann worked initially as a research assistant, then from 1975 until his retirement in 2002 as a research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. Here he was in charge of the projects “Social Inequality Among Children in School Classes” and “Social Rationality”. From 1989 to 1999 he was a director of the institute. Since 1982 he has also been an honorary professor for sociology of education at the Free University of Berlin . Due to his numerous publications, Krappmann enjoys an international reputation and has been a guest lecturer several times in India, Japan, Switzerland and the USA, among others.

He was chairman of the expert commission for the preparation of the 10th report on children and young people of the federal government and is an internationally recognized researcher in the field of childhood and child policy. In February 2003 he was elected as one of 13 members of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child . Together with eight other experts, he was confirmed in this office in February 2007 for a further four years. In the election he received the highest number of votes cast of all candidates. Krappmann is a member of the jury for the German Children's Prize from World Vision Germany .
