Lothar Schweigerer (2018)

Lothar Schweigerer (born September 6, 1953 in Morbach / Hunsrück) is a German pediatrician, oncologist and cancer researcher . He held the chair for paediatrics at the University Medical Center Göttingen and is the chief physician of the clinic for child and adolescent medicine at the Helios Clinic Berlin-Buch .

Life

Schweigerer attended the Nikolaus-von Kues high school in Bernkastel-Kues , studied human medicine at the Justus-Liebig University in Gießen from 1973 to 1980 and passed his medical state examination there in 1980. He then worked at the Rudolf-Buchheim Institute for Pharmacology in Giessen as a research assistant, where he received his doctorate summa cum laude on the immunological function of endorphins in 1984 . With a grant from the Max Kade Foundation, he worked as a post-doctoral research assistant in Denis Gospodarowicz's laboratory at the Cancer Research Institute of the University of California San Francisco(USA) with the mechanisms of tumor angiogenesis . Napoleone Ferrara , who discovered the vascular endothelial growth factor, co-authored several papers . In 1987 Schweigerer returned to Germany and worked in the laboratory of Manfred Schwab, the discoverer of the MYCN gene , at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg on the development and progression mechanisms of neuroblastoma .

In 1987, Schweigerer established his own research group on the subject of tumor angiogenesis and at the same time began his training as a pediatrician at the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . After his qualification as a specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine (1993) and his habilitation (1995), he was a senior physician at the Clinics for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Philipps University in Marburg and the University Clinic in Essen from 1994 to 1997 and 1997 to 2002 active.

Schweigerer received several appeals, including calls to the C3 professor of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden (1999), the "Chair ( Chair ) of Hematology and Oncology" of the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children at the University College London ( UK) (2001) and the C4 professorship for paediatrics with a focus on hematology and oncology at the Georg-August University of Göttingen (2001). From 2002 to 2006 he held the chair for paediatrics and was chief physician at the clinic for child and adolescent medicine with a focus on hematology and oncology and from 2003 to 2005 managing director of the clinic for child and adolescent medicine at the Georg-August University of Göttingen .

In 2006 he accepted an offer to head the clinic for pediatric and adolescent medicine at the Helios-Klinikum Berlin-Buch in the immediate vicinity of the Berlin-Buch research campus .

Schweigerer pursues the concept of "all-round care" for sick children and their families and has established a parental home, a parent oasis and a guest kindergarten at the clinic to care for healthy siblings. All offers are free of charge and are financed by the Mcdonald's Kinderhilfestiftung , the Ein Herz für Kinder foundation and the Eduard-Winter-Kinderstiftung. For the sick children he established many entertainment offers , including performances in the clinic's own theater (e.g. with the Konzerthaus Berlin ) and activities such as clown consultation, making music or works in the clinic's own music studio or workshop.

Schweigerer is the author of over 90 original scientific papers, a founding member of the EDU College of Medicine, chairman of the ICKE in Buch eV association, president of the circle of friends of the Ronald McDonald family home in Berlin-Buch and the medical advisory board of the "Rote Nasen" association.
