life and work

In 1919, after his military service, Toller came to Darmstadt , where he worked as a freelance artist. He was an autodidact . In the 1920s, the focus of his work was on painting. Landscapes and portraits were predominantly his subjects. He often chose motifs from Darmstadt. Among other things, he created the watercolors Last Snow (Städtische Galerie Darmstadt), Auf der Mathildenhöhe , Mädchenkopf and Kiefern an der Bergstrasse . He also dealt with the classic motif of the still life . Toller was a member of the "Darmstadt Group". It belongs to the New Objectivity style. Toller temporarily worked as a bookbinder, set designer, calligrapher , draftsman, graphic artist and etcher. The sculptor Wilhelm Loth was a student of Toller around 1935.

In an air raid on Darmstadt in 1944, he lost his family and all of the work that had been done up until then.

After the Second World War , he created watercolors , gouaches , drawings and, above all, very finely crafted etchings of Darmstadt and the surrounding area.
