Lothian Nicholson
Lieutenant-General Sir Lothian Nicholson , KCB ( January 19, 1827 - June 27, 1893 ) was a British officer and colonial administrator.
Nicholson received his education at Mr Malleson's School in Hove and the Royal Military Academy Woolwich . In 1846 he joined the Royal Corps of Engineers . In 1855 he took part in the siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. In 1857 he was transferred to Calcutta , where he was involved in the suppression of the Indian uprising . He took part in the conquest of Lucknow .
After returning from India in 1861 he was given command of the Royal Engineers in the London District . But in 1868 he worked in the same position in Gibraltar before he became Assistant Adjutant-General for the Royal Engineers in Ireland in the same year .
In 1878 he was named Lieutenant Governor of Jersey . From 1886 Nicholson held the position of Inspector-General of Fortifications . In 1891 he was appointed governor of Gibraltar. He died during his tenure in 1893. His grave is in the North Cemetery in Gibraltar.
