Lothurm
The Lothurm was an observation tower in the municipality of Plateau de Diesse , Canton Bern , Switzerland .
Surname
On December 26, 1999, the devastating hurricane Lothar swept over Europe . He claimed a total of 29 lives in Switzerland (14 people died as a result of the storm, 15 during the clean-up work) and felled over 10 million trees . This catastrophe led to the desire to send a positive message with wood . This gave rise to the idea of realizing an observation tower: the name “Lothurm” arose from “Lothar” and “ tower ”.
Location
The Lothurm stood in the area of the municipality of Lamboing , near the Hohmatt mountain inn near Magglingen. This pasture is part of the 1,850 hectares of forest and pastureland belonging to the Biel civic community. When the weather was nice, you had a good view of the Central Plateau .
In August 2013, a storm damaged the Lohthurm so badly that it was in danger of collapsing and was therefore closed. The tower was dismantled in spring 2014; whether there will be a successor is unclear.
Construction
The simplest possible construction was in the foreground right from the start. The main construction consists of debarked Douglas fir trunks, the floor straps of the passerelles and the platform made of black pine . The FSC -certified Douglas firs and black pines come from the castle's own Malewag forest . They are untreated and there is no chemical protection against weathering. Where appropriate and appropriate, however, other building materials were also used.
financing
The tower has been sponsored by many companies and individuals. Signs with the names of the sponsors were attached to each step.
