Louis Joseph André
Louis Joseph Nicolas André (born March 29, 1838 in Nuits-Saint-Georges , Côte-d'Or , † March 18, 1913 in Dijon ) was a French general and minister of war .
André attended the École polytechnique and became a second lieutenant in the artillery in 1859 , then came as captain to the gun and rifle factory of Châtellerault and later to the fireworks school in Metz . André took part in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870/71 and was appointed Général de brigade and commander of the École polytechnique in 1893 . In 1899 he was promoted to Général de division in Paris and in May 1900 took over the War Ministry in the Waldeck-Rousseau cabinet . He also retained this office in the following cabinet, Émile Combes . With this he resigned on November 15, 1904. He was followed by Maurice Berteaur .
André has carried out radical reforms or at least set them in motion in almost all areas of his department. His endeavors were aimed at increasing the influence of the Department of War on general politics and at breaking the clerical and aristocratic influence on the officer corps. To this end, he almost completely replaced the members of the General Staff , changed the organization of the Supreme War Council, reorganized the colonial army and reorganized the Saint-Cyr military school .
André was married to the opera singer Marguerite Chapuy from 1876 .
