Louis I. de Bourbon , also Louis de Vendôme or Louis de Mercoer u. Ä. (* October 1612 in Paris ; † August 12, 1669 in Aix-en-Provence ) was Duke of Vendôme , Beaufort , Mercœur , Penthièvre and Étampes , grandson of the French King Henry IV and cardinal since 1667 .
Life
He came from the House of Bourbon-Vendôme and was the eldest son of Duke César de Bourbon and his wife Françoise de Lorraine-Mercœur . Louis succeeded his father as Duke of Vendôme in 1665.
The man described as meek and pious married Laura Mancini , a niece of Cardinal Mazarin ( House Mazarin-Mancini ) , on February 4, 1651, still as Duke of Mercœur, in Paris . He thereby became governor of Provence and received supreme command of an army in Italy. After the death of his wife in 1657, the duke retired to a monastery and eventually became a priest .
In Aix-en-Provence he had a baroque pleasure palace, the Pavillon de Vendôme , built for himself and his lover Lucrece de Forbin-Sollies from 1664 .
Shortly before his death, Louis de Bourbon was promoted to cardinal in 1667 . As such he took part in the conclave of 1667, from which Clement IX. emerged as the new Summus Pontifex. He made the cardinal legate of the Holy See at the French court.
He and his wife had three sons:
- Louis II. Joseph (1654–1712), Duke of Vendôme
- Philippe (1655–1727), Duke of Vendôme
- Jules César (1657-1660)
