Louis Majorelle
Louis-Jean-Sylvestre Majorelle (born September 26, 1859 in Toul , † January 15, 1926 in Nancy ) was a French furniture designer.
Life
Louis Majorelle was a son of the furniture designer Auguste Majorelle (1825–1879). In 1861 the family moved from Toul to Nancy. In 1877 Majorelle began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, which he broke off after the death of his father to take over the family's company. In 1885 he married Marie Léonie Jane Kretz, daughter of the director of the Nancy Municipal Theater. Her only son, Jacques Majorelle , became a painter.
Majorelle was a founding member of the Nancy School . His works are considered masterpieces of Art Nouveau . In 1902 he took part in the Prima Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte Decorativa Moderna in Turin .
He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .
