Louis Poggi (born June 18, 1984 in Bastia ) is a French football player who has spent almost his entire career at Gazélec FC Ajaccio . With this he competed for many years in amateur leagues before qualifying for the second and in 2015 even for the first division of France.

Career

Start of his career (until 2005)

Poggi was born in Bastia on the Mediterranean island of Corsica , which belongs to France , and began playing football for the AJ Bastia club, which is located there . Later he was accepted into the youth training center of FC Nantes , but his breakthrough in professional football was denied. He returned to Corsica and in August 2000 came to third division club Gazélec FCO Ajaccio , the second strongest club from the island's capital after AC Ajaccio . First he joined the youth team, but moved to the first team in 2001 after being relegated to the fourth division. The then 17-year-old was initially only called up sporadically before he was able to fight for a regular place in the course of the 2002/03 season. With the GFC he was able to establish himself in the third division in the following years. In 2005, the defensive midfielder , who was sometimes called up as a left or right winger, also moved to third-rate Sporting Toulon .

Intermezzo at Toulon (2005-2007)

At Toulon he was regularly called up and should help the club on the Mediterranean coast of the French mainland to the desired promotion to the second division. However, the sporting ambitions could not be implemented at all, which is why 2007 even came down to fourth class. In view of this, Poggi decided to return to the Gazélec FCO Ajaccio, which has now also been relegated to this level.

Return to Ajaccio (since 2007)

From 2007 he stayed with the GFC, about which he said in an interview: “[...] actually [the club] means everything to me. I came here as a boy and was welcomed with open arms. ” He was not used in the 2007/08 season, but was able to re-establish himself as a regular player afterwards. In 2010/11 he scored a record seven goals in terms of his goalscoring results and thus contributed to the promotion to the third division. Only one year later, the further leap into the second class and thus into the professional area was successful. Thus, the now 28-year-old Poggi was able to celebrate his debut in professional football when he was in the starting line-up on July 27th, 2012 in a 0-0 win against SM Caen . He experienced the further course of the season as the undisputed top performer, but could not avert the direct relegation of his team.

In the 2013/14 season, Ajaccio succeeded in immediately returning to the second highest league, in which Poggi was to lead the team as captain. Against teams like the previously relegated city rivals AC Ajaccio , relegation was given as a goal, but the eleven he led could establish themselves high in the table. In 2015, the surprising leap into the French premier league was made perfect, with which the now 30-year-old player was able to record the greatest success of his career. After promotion he remained captain, but was only called up occasionally and only made his debut on matchday 7 on 23 September 2015 in a 1-1 draw against Stade Rennes in the top division. In total, he participated in 15 matches in the 2015/16 season and stayed with his team within reach of the non-relegation places, but could not avert direct relegation. In 2017 he left the club after ten years.
