Louis Renner GmbH is the world's largest independent manufacturer of upright and grand piano mechanisms.

Development and production

The company specialized in the use of the wood of hornbeam and the drying took wood against itself. The conditioned wood is further processed into fillet rods . The raw wood is processed in the Gärtringen plant . In the Meuselwitz plant , piano and grand piano mechanisms are assembled and hammer heads are manufactured.

The company developed a systematically structured training program in which piano technicians and piano builders are taught in courses the know-how of the sonic inner workings of a grand piano or piano.

history

1882-1914

Louis Renner started producing piano mechanisms in October 1882, according to the company "on a modest level". In 1902 the company moved into a new factory building. At that time the workforce consisted of 35 employees. In 1911 Renner already had 100 employees and a new part of the building was added. By the First World War , the number of employees rose to 175.

After 1945

After the Second World War , manufacturers from many countries came back to Renner products. In 1952 Renner expanded its product range and also offered repairs, spare parts service and accessories. The already existing individual parts production was expanded and a large warehouse was set up. In 1960 the company premises were expanded further. In 1974 the factory in Odenheim was opened, where all raw wood processing took place until 2012. Soon after the fall of the Wall in 1991, Renner opened his third plant in Zeitz near Leipzig . This is where the piano mechanisms are produced today.

2007

According to IG Metall, the piano mechanics company employed around 100 people at its Gärtringen location in 2007. In February 2003 there were still 130 employees. Since the company was founded in October 1882, the company has delivered around 3 million mechanisms for grand and upright pianos.

Renner mechanics

The machine heads have an average of 8800 pieces each made of wood, felt and metal . The Schimmel company , Europe's largest piano and grand piano manufacturer, mainly uses Renner mechanisms.

The company faces competitive pressures from cheap imports from China and other countries. Most competitors now make parts out of plastic. To this day, Renner does without plastic parts (as of 2017). CNC machines are currently being used to manufacture parts.
