Louis Pehr Sparre af Söfdeborg (born August 3, 1863 in Gravellona Lomellina , Italy , † October 26, 1964 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish painter.

Life

Louis Sparre was a son of Pehr Ambjörn Sparre (1828-1921) and his wife Terasita Adèle Josefa Gaëtana Barbavara di Gravellona (1844-1867). He studied in Paris , where he met the Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela . After visiting Finland for the first time in 1889 , he settled there in 1891. He married the graphic designer Eva Mannerheim-Sparre .

Sparre worked as an illustrator and painter. He was enthusiastic about Karelianism and in 1892 traveled to Karelia , Russia , in the hope of finding the original Finnish people there. He worked on the book Finland in the 19th Century , published in 1898 , that campaigned for Finnish independence in the world.

In 1897 he founded the company Iris in Porvoo , which was to produce modern, artistically designed consumer goods. Sparre acted there as a furniture designer and artistic director. He appointed Alfred William Finch to head the ceramics department. Iris created the Finnish Pavilion at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 together with the Friends of Finnish Handicraft Association . In 1902 Iris went bankrupt . Sparre initially worked with his wife as an interior and furniture designer in Finland, but then moved to Sweden in 1908.

In 1912 he took part for Sweden in the Olympic Summer Games held in Stockholm and was fifth in the epee singles.
