Loveless is the second album by Irish shoegazing band My Bloody Valentine .

It is considered a typical work of shoegazing and was the international breakthrough for the band. After its appearance, however, the four band members initially moved further and further apart. It wasn't until 2013 that the band released another album.

The album cover shows a still image from the music video for "Soon".

History of origin

It was released on November 4, 1991 after two years of recording. The album was recorded in 19 different studios and reportedly cost over £ 250,000, which brought the Creation Records label to the brink of ruin. Several times the contract with the band was almost canceled. The band thanked every helper and co-producer in the booklet, even “if they only made tea” ( Kevin Shields ).

Due to a nervous breakdown, the drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig was only able to develop the drum pattern for the album, with the exception of the first song, Only Shallow , he was unable to play on his own . According to front man Kevin Shields, the individual drum parts were simply looped , which wasn't a big loss. Cíosóig also wrote the short instrumental interlude Touched .

According to Shields, there is hardly anything worse than music with bad lyrics. More time was spent writing the lyrics than creating the music. Still, he admits that most of the lyrics on the album are incomprehensible. This is due to the fact that the vocal parts were often recorded late at night and the singer Bilinda Butcher was accordingly sleepy. Shields joked that he once considered evaluating multiple attempts at deciphered lyrics on the band's website for accuracy.

Reviews

The album was not a great success commercially, but it received critical acclaim and is considered one of the best albums in its genre, which has also inspired many other artists. So Allmusic's Heather Phares gave the album full marks, writing:

"'Isn't Anything' was good enough to inspire an entire scene of My Bloody Valentine soundalikes, but 'Loveless'' greatness proved that the band was inimitable."

' Isn't Anything ' was good enough to inspire a whole scene of My Bloody Valentine followers, but the greatness of 'Loveless' proved the band was inimitable. "

- Heather Phares

The English-language Rolling Stone initially gave “only” four out of five points, but later the album also appeared in the list of the 500 best albums of all time by the German Rolling Stone at number 179. Pitchfork Media even listed it as number two on albums from the 1990s .
