Lovro Šitović

Lovro Šitović (* 1682 in Ljubuški ; † February 28, 1729 in Šibenik ) was a religious Croatian writer and epic poet .

Life

He came from a Muslim family and came under the name "Hasan" to the world . At the age of 8, little Hasan was taken hostage by Haiduken captain Šimun Talajić . During the hostage-taking he spent a lot of time with other children and learned to read and write in their company . He also got to know Catholicism . After his father had paid the ransom to the Haiduken captain , he took Hasan back home to Ljubuški. But the boy ran away from home and ended up in the Franciscan monastery in Zaostrog , where Ilija Mamić taught him Christianity. At the age of seventeen he was baptized there in the name of Stjepan. In 1701 he became a novice in Našice and was given the religious name Lovro. From 1708 to 1715 he taught philosophy in Makarska , then until 1716 theology in Šibenik, later theology and philosophy in Split . In 1724 he returned to Makarska to teach philosophy again. He died in 1729 during a sermon in Šibenik.
