history

The area around Zaostrog was already settled before the birth of Christ, as shown by a granite hand mill from the Neolithic Age, which was found in 1953 on the nearby Mount Viter. During the time of the Roman Empire, life around Zaostrog was very cultural, some reliefs from that time are now preserved as monuments and prove an Illyrian settlement.

With the Croatian settlement in the course of the 7th century , the settlement was named Ostrog . In 950 the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire had Ostrog expanded into a fortified city. The new settlement Zaostrog , which was first mentioned in 1494, was built on a plateau below the fortress in the Middle Ages .

In the 14th century a monastery was built , which was first used by the Augustinians and from 1468 by the Franciscans . In the 17th century the settlement was partially moved a little further to the coast, but two more churches were built in the old part of the settlement by the 19th century . The monastery also experienced strong development in the 18th century . At the beginning of the 20th century, Zaostrog was integrated into the state of Yugoslavia . When the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was destroyed by the Axis Powers during World War II , the town became a municipality of the Independent State of Croatia when the fascist Ustaša came to power in 1941 . After the end of the war it belonged again to Yugoslavia.
