Lower Canada

Lower Canada (French Bas-Canada , English Lower Canada ) was from 1791 to 1841 a British colony on the lower reaches of the Saint Lawrence River and on the coast of the Saint Lawrence Gulf . It included the southern part of what is now the Canadian province of Québec and Labrador . The capital was Québec .

Lower Canada and the English-influenced Upper Canada came into being with the entry into force of the constitutional law of 1791 and the division of the province of Québec . This division was decided by the British Parliament on June 10, 1791 and came into force on December 26, 1791. Lower Canada comprised part of the former French colony of New France , which had been conquered by the British during the French and Indian War. Other parts of New France were divided into the colonies of Nova Scotia , New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island .

After the Lower Canada Rebellion was put down , the constitution was repealed in 1838 and a special commission took over the affairs of state. In 1841 the French-influenced Lower Canada and the English Upper Canada merged to form the Province of Canada .
