The Niani Empire was a historical empire on the territory of the present-day West African states of Gambia and Senegal .

Niani lay on the northern bank of the Gambia , orographically on the right side. In the west it was bounded by the Nianija Bolong , there was the kingdom of Saloum adjacent . In the east was the Wuli Empire , here it was delimited by the Sandugu Bolong as a landmark. To the north, Niani extended far beyond the present-day border with Senegal.

history

In the early 19th century, the empire split into two kingdoms dominated by the Mandinka , Lower Niani ( French Haut Niani ) and Upper Niani ( French Bas Niani ). At the end of the 19th century, the British colonial rulers in the Protectorate of British Gambia made the area two districts. Lower Niani became the Niani District and Upper Niani was renamed the Sami District.

The Gambian districts of Niani and Nianija in the Central River Region make reference to this empire. Niani and Sami were two separate constituencies from the 1962 parliamentary elections , and in 1997 Niamina was separated as its own constituency.
